Whatever message that is trying to convey, it just strikes me as adorable and reminiscent of own childhood antics.įor those that are fans of the FABLES cover art or Hellboy, I would highly recommend this graphic novel. Full color manga 'Journey to the West: The Great Monkey King' 1,2 (Shueisha) DRAGON GIRL & MONKEY KING' (Dark Horse Comics). Of all the artwork my favorite was the dragon with the little girl scrawling a Hello Kitty symbol on it’s body. Katsuya Terada’s take on the legend of the Monkey King in a savage, lusty saga that The Portland Tribune calls a Buddhist version of Conan the Barbarian. There are at least one hundred pages of art that overshadow the amazing art he did for Hellboy. Katsuya Terada is well known for doing character designs for Hellboy (one of his artwork was the inspiration for a Hellboy bust figure). Not sure what that means for my psyche but I still enjoyed looking at it. Terada's a prominent Japanese artist and illustrator who's known for his creative character designs. Jarring but it’s still a beautiful print. Dragon Girl and Monkey King is Katsuya Terada 's artbook for 2014. Terada’s style has this way of lulling me until I notice some crazy detail like a parasite exploding from a person’s head as people are descending an escalator. Even the ones that were really weird or scary. Whether it was the distant but sad eyes, the ethereal movements, or the subject matter, I felt attached to each page somehow. Each of the pages contained something that made me pause. There is this wonderful sense of excitement when you see art that freezes your focus on it.

The editors of Feminism and War have brought together a diverse set of leading theorists and activists who examine the questions raised by ongoing American military initiatives, such as: What are the implications of an imperial nation/state laying claim to womens liberation? What is the relation between this claim and resulting American foreign policy and military action? Did American intervention and invasion in fact result in liberation for women in Afghanistan and Iraq? What multiple concepts are embedded in the phrase womens liberation? How are these connected to the specifics of religion, culture, history, economics, and nation within current conflicts? What is the relation between the lives of Afghan and Iraqi women before and after invasion, and that of women living in the US? How do women who define themselves as feminists resist or acquiesce to this nation/state claim in current theory and organizing? Feminism and War reveals and critically analyzes the complicated ways in which America uses gender, race, class, nationalism, imperialism to justify, legitimate, and continue war. But there has been little public space for dialogue about the complex relationship between feminism, women, and war.
